The Honorary Degrees
Doctor of Laws — John Donald Hicks
Distinguished historian and member of the class of 1913, and holder of a master's degree from
his alma mater. He has left his mark as scholar, teacher, and administrator upon three major
universities: Nebraska, Wisconsin, and California. A recognized authority on agricultural, polit-
ical, and constitutional problems of the Middle West, he has trained numerous graduate students
for the rigorous life of dedicated research, and in his widely used writings he has provided a
generation of undergraduates with an objective and heartening introduction to their nation's
heritage. Past President of the Mississippi Valley Historical Association and of the Pacific Coast
Branch of the American Historical Association, he has also been Visiting Professor of American
History and Institutions at the University of Cambridge. Northwestern University is proud to
honor one of her outstanding sons.
Presented by Richard W. Leopold, Professor of History
Doctor of Laws — James Cummings Bonbright
Outstanding educator, economist, public servant, and honored recipient of the Northwestern
Alumni Award of Merit in 1954. As Professor of Finance at Columbia University, he has earned
acclaim for his astute analyses of American financial policies and his ability to inspire his stu-
dents with an understanding of and appreciation for the traditions and responsibilities of busi-
ness. He has continued with enviable success the standards of scholarship so firmly held by his
father, Daniel Bonbright, at Northwestern.
An untiring public servant, he has been an economic consultant to Congress, America's delegate
to the World Power Conference, and an economic assistant to President Wilson's Inquiry Com-
mission. He has been a devoted advocate of power and navigation development and has served
as a trustee of the Power Authority of the State of New York.
He is the author of several books on finance and public utilities and has been honored by the
Harvard Law School for distinguished writing in the legal field.
Presented by James F. Oates, Trustee of Northwestern University
Doctor of Science — John Franklin Enders
Nobel Prize winner in medicine and physiology in 1954. Distinguished bacteriologist and virol-
ogist at Harvard University, and one of the leading microbiologists of his generation. He, to-
gether with his co-workers, set the stage for the development of poliomyelitis vaccine by the dis-
covery that poliomyelitis virus could be cultivated in living tissue cells. This discovery has had
a revolutionary effect on the methods of study of other viruses and, therefore, will lead rapidly
to a better understanding of the nature of these disease producing agents.
His epochal contribution is recognized as marking an important turning point in man's battle
to prevent the ravaging effects produced by infectious disease.
Presented by Guy P. Youmans, Professor of Bacteriology

and research he has improved the quality of teaching and increased the learning opportunities
for children and youth throughout the United States and abroad. As a survey director and con-
sultant in numerous American cities and as a leader in national professional societies and organi-
zations, he has exercised great influence in stimulating the thinking and extending the vision
of teachers in public and private schools at all educational levels.
He has been a classroom teacher and high school administrator, a professor, and a dean. Cur-
rently President of Teachers College, Columbia University, he continues to be preeminent in
his ability to help fellow scholars reach high levels of personal and professional achievement.

Renowned for her performances in the United States and Europe, she has been a member of the
Metropolitan Opera and of the Chicago and San Francisco Civic Operas. She is Honorary Presi-
dent and Director of the Voice Department at the Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara,
California. Esteemed for her contributions, both as a performing artist and teacher, she has
been made a Chevalier of the French Legion of Honor, has been awarded the Medal of Art by
the government of Sweden and the Ring of Honor by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, and
holds an honorary membership in the State Opera, Vienna.

and Dean of the School of Music
Doctor of Laws — Stanley Pargellis
Librarian preeminent and distinguished contributor to the advancement of learning in the
Middle West. Ohio-born, educated both in this country and as a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford, he
pursued a successful academic career as teacher and professor of history at three leading institu-
tions until 1942 when he became librarian of the Newberry Library in Chicago. Not confining
his interests to limited professional areas, he has displayed the imagination and vision to make
the Newberry Library one of the most significant cultural centers in the entire Middle Western
region. Thanks to his leadership, the Newberry Library enriches the community in a variety
of outstanding ways, serving, for example, as a stimulating meeting place for gatherings of men
and women of letters, as a haven for Poetry Magazine, and as a sponsor of highly prized New-
berry fellowships. Northwestern University salutes an outstanding librarian who has achieved
renown as an educational statesman as well.
Presented by Payson S. Wild, Vice-President
and Dean of Faculties of Northwestern University

NORTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY
Doctor of Sacred Theology — Takeshi Muto
Moderator of the Kyodan, the United Church of Christ in Japan. His contribution to the
spiritual and educational forces of Japanese and world culture comes through his outstanding
work, as pastor, creative scholar and writer, translator, teacher, administrator, and representa-
tive of the Kyodan to various conferences of the World Council of Churches. Untouched by the
bitterness of war, his clear vision and strong faith have been of immeasurable value in the
rebuilding of Christian churches and schools in Japan.
It is to be noted with special pride that he studied at Garrett Biblical Institute and received an
M.A. degree from Northwestern University in 1923. Even as the Church acclaims him one of
her great leaders. Northwestern hails him as one of her most distinguished sons.
Presented by Harold A. Bosley, Trustee of Northiuestern University
Doctor of Laws — John Johnston Parker
United States Circuit Judge since 1925 and recipient in 1943 of the American Bar Association
Medal for Conspicuous Service in the Cause of American Jurisprudence. As a lawyer he dis-
tinguished himself first in practice and later in government service. As a judge he has been
fearless, wise, and scholarly, both in his long service on the Court of Appeals for the Fourth
Circuit and as alternate member of the International Military Tribunal at Nuremberg. As chief
judge of his circuit, as chairman of a special committee of the American Bar Association, and as
Vice-President of the American Judicature Society, he has provided imaginative and effective
leadership in the improvement of the administration of justice. As lecturer and writer he has
restated in terms particularly meaningful for our times the basic philosophy of American con-
stitutional democracy. As citizen and civic leader he has sagely counseled and nobly served his
church, his university, his state, and his nation.
Presented by Willard H. Pedrick, Professor of Law
Doctor of Science — Theodore von Karman
Distinguished scientist and engineer. He has formulated theories in diversified fields and is a
pioneer in transforming engineering from art to science. He has contributed profoundly to
applied mathematics, mechanics, aerodynamics, fluid mechanics, gas dynamics, and aerothermo-
chemistry. A brilliant teacher, he has inspired many scholars all over the world. He combines
knowledge and intuition in developing unusual devices which will soon take men to new fron-
tiers outside this planet. A wise adviser to education, industry, and government, he has con-
tributed immensely to the technological supremacy of his adopted country. As respected Chair-
man of the Advisory Group for Aeronautical Research and Development of the North Atlantic
Treaty Organization, he has brought together the scientists of the Western nations. He is the
statesman of modern engineering and a unique protagonist of the air age.
Presented by Alt Bulent Cambel, Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering

Doctor of Laws — Harlan Henthorne Hatcher
Distinguished author, teacher, historian, and university president. A native of Ohio, he is noted
for his definitive writings on the history of that state, as well as for his incisive criticisms in the
field of English literature. For many years a teacher at Ohio State University, where he was
Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and, later, Vice-President of the university, he has
gained equal renown since 1951 as the capable President of the University of Michigan. His
significant contributions in more than one field of endeavor have earned him the deserved
reputation of fine scholar and outstanding administrator.
Presented by Kenneth F. Burgess, President of the Board
of Trustees of Northwestern University
